Tip 19 - Miners
Mining is very basic. You send your miner to an asteroid, he builds a mining station, and then you reap bonuses/benefits if the miner is sending those resources to one of your planet.
Traditionally I just set my miners to automated, as they do an excellent job of setting up mining operations on every applicable asteroid they can. When they run out of stuff to do, the game will tell you. At this point, send them home until you uncover a new asteroid region you've colonized, or you've researched the better mining techs. When you click your miner you have two way to automate him. You can double click the ship and choose automate.
Or if the ship is already highlighted, you can just click the automate button that's on your task bar. Simple!
But what exactly is this doing for you? If you look at the picture below you'll see I have all the asteroids in my sector with tiny mining colonies on them (when you research advanced mining tech they get huge and cool looking.

There are 3 lines. 2 intersect and feed Saturn, and the last one feeds Saturn I .

If you click one of the asteroids you can then ASSIGN it to a specific planet. Here I will click the assign button, and then click Saturn so all of my asteroids feed a single planet.
From the normal planet screen it's hard to see just what kind of effect asteroids have on the planet. In fact, there isn't any indicator at all.
