Tip 15 - Colony Screen and Fast Building
When you first start out, your production will be awful, and until you get some factories going you won't be doing much very fast.
What I always do is fast-build the first factory on each planet I colonize. I build ~3 factories per planet until production gets ramped up. Sometimes I'll recover them for something else, other times I'll build even more factories. But you've got to build factories, otherwise it will take you infinity to complete any social or military builds.
So, double click your home planet:

And on the next screen you can plop down a factory and then choose "buy".

Yes it's a bit expensive at 438 bc, but the fact you'll have your colony running up 9 turns faster (which increases your development speed even more with every additional factory you build) it's a good thing to do.
on the next screen you can see the group of structures I have queued up to be built... 2 more factories, entertainment (for morale), and market (for money)
You'll notice I placed the Entertainment Network on the blue drip icon. If you click a spot before placing a structure you can see what that plot of land is, and anything with an icon on it has a bonus.
