Tip 25 - Extreme Planets
Like I mentioned on the previous page, you're going to have to make difficult decisions about what to research. When you have a map with few habitable planets (like this setup), then each planet is extremely valuable, and not trying to colonize an extreme planet isn't a very good strategy. However, if I'm the only person researching these alternate planet types, I'm going to fall behind in research other important areas such as military, social production (stuff you can build and put on your planet), ship technology, diplomacy, and trade. And that's what makes Dark Avatar so fun. So many more decisions to make. In the old game, I used to just research the cheapest thing all the time. Not much strategy and quite boring. With the Dark Avatar expansion I actually have to make tough decisions in this part of the game. Exciting!
Bring up your research screen, and if you click the more button, you'll see
and expanded view of the tech tree.
You can use your mouse wheel to zoom in/out, and you can drag the screen around until you find what you're looking for.
It might be odd looking up at that. I have Aquatic and Toxic Colonization, but not the prerequisite (Extreme Colonization) for them. This is because I'm using a race that has the "Adaptable Supertrait". So at this point, I need to research Extreme Colonization and then Heavy Gravity. I want to make sure I get it before anyone else, so I'm going to max research at the expense of everything else.
Looking back up at the Research tree picture, you'll notice all the extreme world techs are split in two. This is because to develop the full capabilities of the planet, you need to research the tech further. In fact if you colonize a planet with just one tech you might get frustrated because it's taking forever to build anything and losing money. Well, that's why! The people are miserable on your planet, so finish the research!
